Westmount Y Maîtres-Nageurs 2011 Annual General Meeting

The Westmount Y Maîtres-Nageurs Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday August 30th at the Westmount Y, commencing at 6:30pm. Everyone is invited to attend.

The agenda for this year; minutes and financial statement from last year are available for download at the following links:

Agenda2011

Registration for the 2011-12 season will commence on this evening. There are forms at the Westmount Y and you can download the registration form ahead of time here. Please note that anyone carrying a negative swimmer account balance will be asked to settle their account prior to registering for this season.  Cheques should be made out to “Westmount YMCA Masters Swim Team”, we will not accept cash.

There are two “members at large” positions on the board opening up in the coming season. The primary role of these positions involves attending board meetings and being a contact person for the other swimmers in your time slot as well as sometimes helping out with other team activities. If you would like to get a little more involved with the team, please let me know directly.

The past season has been one of great success. The year ahead is going to be a great one, but also a lot of fun. I am really looking forward to swimming with you all in the 2011-12 season.

Westmount Y pool closed August 20-September 11

Just a not-so-quick note about the closure of the Westmount Y pool for maintenance and a new paint job. The pool will be closed from August 22 to September 11.  For those who want to keep swimming, you have options at the Downtown Y and at Jean Drapeau.
During this period, the Downtown Y will remain open.  Their Masters swims are Tuesday/Thursday 6:30-7:45am and Monday/Wednesday 6:45-8pm.  Be warned, they only have 2 lanes set aside for masters and expand as numbers demand, it may be squishy…
Also, we have our lanes at Jean Drapeau - 3 beautiful wide, 50m lanes – not so squishy :) .  Our reservation has been extended until September 11. The pool will be closed to the public but not to private groups like ours and don’t worry, the water is heated.
The Y will be covering the cost for all the extra rentals in September, thanks to Andrew Cox-Twardowski for taking care of us.
The schedule for the rest of our outdoor season at PJD is as follows (Downtown and YMHA swimmers are more than welcome to join us):
Sun August 21 – 9-10:30am ($3)
Mon August 22 – 7-8:30pm ($3)
Wed August 24 – 6:30-8pm ($3)
Fri August 26 – 6:30-8pm ($3)
Sun August 28 – 9-10:30am ($3)
Mon August 29 – 6:30-8pm ($3)
Wed August 31 – 6:30-8pm ($3)
Thur September 1 – 6:30-8pm (FREE!)
Sun September 4 – 9-10:30am (FREE!)
Mon September 5 – 6:30-8pm (FREE!)
Wed September 7 – 6:30-8pm (FREE!)
Thur September 8 – 6:30-8pm (FREE!)
Sun September 11 – 9-10:30am (FREE!)

Don’t forget the AGM on August 30 at 6:30pm at the Westmount Y.  The agenda and registration form will be distributed soon.

2011-12 season brings more training options

Good news for Westmount Y Maitres-Nageurs!

The YM-YWHA (Snowdon Y) is expanding their Masters swim program this year to include additional early morning and evening practices and they are inviting all team members to join them if they wish.  Troy, fresh back from the arctic and still awaiting the birth of his first baby (as of writing), will be coaching all of their practices (don’t worry, we will still be seeing him at Westmount).

The YM-YWHA is charging Westmount Y Maîtres-Nageurs a special fee of 125$ per session (the first session runs September 13th-December 22nd) and you don’t have to be a member of their gym.  Here is a summary of the information…

YMYWHA (Snowdon Y) Masters swim program:

*Coach: Troy Rhoades

*125$ per session (Fall: September 13th-December 22nd)

*Practices times do not coincide with Westmount Y practice times:

Mornings:

Tuesday and Thursday AM: 6:45am-7:55am and 8:30am-9:30am

Friday AM : 9:30am-10:30am

Evenings:

Monday and Wednesday PM 8:30pm-9:30pm

*Swimmers will affiliate with Westmount Y Masters if they choose to compete

With the exception of the Friday 8:30am practice at Snowdon, none of the practices coincide with the Westmount times.  This is great news for our club because it will allow our swimmers to train up to 6 days a week with consistent coaching and will offer more flexibility in practice times and location.

Westmount represents at Championnats de France des Maîtres, Gap

June 30 – July 3, Laure Cauchard and Thomas Borderie swam in the French Masters National Championships in Gap.  Both of them had great swims and did our team proud with Laure on the podium for her 400IM, 100m back and 3000m open water.

In Laure’s words:
Bizzzzz :)

World and National records set by Ian Smith

Congratulations to Ian Smith who had an amazing meet at the 2011 Colonies Zone LCM Championship Meet hosted by the Middlebury Muffintops in Vermont over the St Jean Baptiste long weekend.  In the 70-74 years age group, Ian set bot the World and National record for the men’s 50m freestyle with a time of 28.35 as well as National records for the 100m freestyle (1:06.27) and the 50m fly (32.94).

Summer party and awards night

What can be said… it was a great evening with great company and great food and even greater hosts who backed up from last hosting last year’s summer party – Dave and his family.  Many thanks for having us to your beautiful home again and an extra thank you to Dave’s daughter for her mural celebrating our 3 Provincial Championship this past year.

We also wished our head coach, Martin Levine, farewell as he heads of to new opportunities as well as handing out our annual team awards… some are handed out each year, some are fun one’s drawn from the past year of swimming.  Each year, there are two awards that are probably the most significant to the team:

The Gary Gallon Team Spirit in memory of a wonderfule man who was a founding member of the team and a driving force in it’s early days until he passed away. This year’s recipient of the Gary Gallon is Rosa Pasquantonio.

DSCN3988

Swimmer of the Year – our team members vote on who they think is the swimmer of the year, this year it was a two-horse race right out of the gate with one swimmer inching ahead of the other before another vote drew them level again.  This year’s Swimmer of the Year, voted by the team was a tie!  Robin Berlyn and Vitor Lima are Westmount YMCA’s swimmers of the year!

photo

It was amazing – many people wrote in with their thoughts about who they thought should be the swimmer of the year…

  • A gentleman and all-around great guy
  • Always has a smile on his face
  • An amazing swimmer
  • Great times and a great guy
  • Returned to swimming from a set-back
  • “Cleaned up in his age group”

All these wonderful comments apply to these two…  Congratulations Robin and Vitor.

I give you our full list of winners (with photos at the end):

Carla’s annual Maine bike and kayak trip, June 23-26 2011

All information can be accessed here

Once again Carla is organizing the Maine Bike and Kayak Trip and you are invited!

The Southern Coast of Maine offers some of the prettiest bike routes on the Eastern Coast. It also offers miles of broad sandy beaches, rock-rimmed coves and headlands, weathered fishing shacks, quaint resort towns and ports, lighthouses and lobster.

If you are interested in a unique way to see Coastal Maine try kayaking in Casco Bay. Kayakers will wander amongst the many outer islands, beneath Civil War Forts, through protected passages, past seal covered ledges to island retreats.

For those who want to forego some of the activity there are always local events, summer theatre and of course the Outlets.

A brief synopsis of the weekend follows:

Thursday, June 23:

Suggested day of arrival

Friday, June 24:

Ride #1: Local ride Cape-Able, Kennebunk Beach, Kennebunkport, Cape Porpoise, Goose Rocks, Biddeford Pool

Afternoon: Relaxation on the beach?

Saturday, June 25:

(Two Options)

1. Kayaking with Coastal Maine Kayak in Casco Bay. Tour led by a licensed Maine Guide. Kayaks, PFD’s, paddles provided. We will stop at one of the islands for lunch. (People interested in this option should contact Carla (link abaove) for booking information)

or

11. Ride #2: Different routes will be available

Also, this will be the evening for the group dinner. More information will follow.

Sunday, June 26:

Ride #3: (New Ride) College to Coast: A scenic ride that begins at Bowdoin College and crosses two Casco Bay islands to Land’s End.
For those who do not want to ride perhaps a visit to Bowdoin College Museum of Art and The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum may be of interest.

Afternoon: (Local’s Tip): End your ride with lunch on the deck over the Androscoggin River at the Sea Dog Brewing Company. As good as the beer is, the food and location make this a worthwhile lunch spot.

If this is your day of departure try taking the route 26N home from here. If you are staying another day or two why not check out the shopping in Freeport – home of the massive retailer L.L. Bean.

Accommodation:

Once again we will be staying at Village By the Sea in Wells,
Maine. Please keep in mind that many of the two bedroom condominiums can accommodate up to 6 guests. One bedroom condo’s can accommodate up to 4 guests. (Sharing makes sense) Take a look at Village By the Sea! www.vbts.com
